Vehicle Alignment
Generally, rear-wheel drive cars only need the front two wheels aligned. However, front-wheel drive cars typically need all four wheels aligned if they have an independent rear suspension system. This is called a vehicle alignment or tracking adjustment.
Vehicle alignment is also necessary on a rear-wheel drive car when the rear axle is not perpendicular to the car frame. In such a case, the rear wheels will not follow in the tracks of the front wheels. The car body will appear slightly turned but still travel straight ahead.
